“The Synod on the Family is not so much a doctrinal synod as a pastoral synod, as was the case with the Second Vatican Council,” declared Archbishop Bruno Forte, Special Relator of the Synod on the Family, at a press conference on October 5.
However, in a video message broadcast on Tuesday, September 3, 2015, at the conclusion of a theological colloquium in Buenos Aires, the Supreme Pontiff called on the participants to go beyond the cleavage between doctrine and pastoral ministry, a veritable stumbling block for the session of the Synod of Bishops on the family. On the contrary, the Holy Father said one should “seek to overcome this divorce between theology and pastoral care, between faith and life”.
How should we look at this divorce between doctrine and pastoral care that the Pope himself observes?
